Looking back: the subject of History in our curriculum
 
 
 


This self-paced on-line course explores the subject of History in the primary school curriculum as an attempt to reconstruct and interpret the past through working as an historian. They will appreciate that successful teachers of history use a broad range of classroom approaches and methodologies. Participants will engage with aspects of all strands of the prescribed history curriculum to a lesser or greater degree.

The on-line format of the course enables you to study when and where you want to learn. Content is divided into 5 modules which you can complete in any order between July 1st and August 28th 2009.

Participants are encouraged to interact with one another using the communication tools (forum, chat, e-mail) provided by the CPD College learning system. Active facilitation throughout the course provides expert interaction, guidance and feedback for all participants. Assignments and questions which call for critical reflection, self-analysis and a reasoned response punctuate this highly interactive web based course.

On completion of the course the participant will be presented with their own time record, excercise content and approval by the course facilitator as their CPD record to keep.

   Learning outcomes:  
Through engagement with the course content and through the sharing of successful teaching approaches within the discussion forum, the knowledge and insights gained by participants will further inform & refine their own approach to the teaching of History in the coming year.
 
 
   Modules:  
01 - To impart an understanding of History as being an attempt to reconstruct and interpret the past through working as an historian.
02 - To introduce participants to the broad range of classroom approaches and methodologies used by the successful history teacher.
03 - To familiarize participants with the content areas of Local studies, Family and Story.
04 - To explore with participants the area of Early peoples and Ancient Societies.
05 - To explore the concepts of continuity and change over time, to look at eras of change and conflict and to look at life, society, work and culture in the past.
